Mario Hernandez, Esq.

General Counsel

Mario Hernandez is an Assistant Vice President and Assistant General Counsel in the Investments Law Section of MetLife Legal Affairs. In this role, Mario is responsible for legal support to MetLife's Affiliated Insurance Companies' Investments function (AIC), including supporting the Office of the Chief Investment Officer on Investment Committee related corporate governance and oversight.  Mario regularly provides counsel on insurance law, regulatory, compliance and portfolio management matters, and supports the AIC’s oversight of its affiliated investment manager, MetLife Investment Management (MIM). Mario also supports MIM’s Sustainable Investment Strategies team, in the evaluation and integration of environmental, social and governance (ESG) initiatives.

Prior to his current role, Mario served in a practice group coordinator capacity for MIM’s Alternative Investments Unit and was responsible for legal matters relating to MetLife’s investments in alternative funds, including private equity, venture capital and hedge funds. 

Prior to joining MetLife in 2007, Mario was a Corporate Associate in Lowenstein Sandler's Investment Management and Tech Groups.  In this capacity, Mario represented corporate clients in connection with a broad range of transactions and general corporate matters, with focus on venture capital funding transactions, private fund formation, and mergers and acquisitions.   

Mario earned his B.A. in Political Science with High Honors from Rutgers College and his J.D. with Honors from Rutgers University School of Law.
