Emilia Perez, Esq. is the Assistant Section Chief of Litigation for the City of Newark Law Department.  In addition to managing other attorneys, Ms. Perez is responsible for providing legal counsel to the City of Newark, the Mayor, the fire and police departments, and all city employees, in connection with matters including but not limited to, car accidents, slip and falls, wrongful death, civil rights, and employment discrimination.  While at the City, she has litigated cases in State court, the United States District Court, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit.  She has also served as an Assistant Municipal Prosecutor at the Newark Municipal Court for the past three and a half years.  Prior to joining the City of Newark, Emilia clerked for the Honorable Bradley Ferencz, J.S.C. in the Middlesex County Civil Division.

Emilia obtained her J.D. from Seton Hall Law.  While at Seton Hall, she served as the academic coordinator and later co-president of Latin American Law Students Association and as the regional student president of the Hispanic National Bar Association.  Moreover, she was a member of the Black Law Students Association, the Asian Pacific Law Students Association, and many others.  While in law school, she was selected as a member of the Civil Litigation Clinic and volunteered as an interpreter for the Immigration Clinic.  She also completed a judicial externship with the Hon. Jose Linares, U.S.D.J. Additionally, Ms. Perez interned for the Honorable F. Michael Giles, United States Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York, and the New Jersey Sports and Exposition Authority.  She earned a Bachelor of Science from Rutgers University.

Ms. Perez was appointed to the Seton Hall University School of Law Diversity Council where she served from 2009-2011. She has been a member of the American Bar Association, Essex County Bar Association, the New Jersey State Bar Association, and Latinas United for Political Empowerment, where she served on various committees for the Annual Young Latina Leadership Conference.  Currently, she is on the board of the Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey and serves as the Regional Trustee for Middlesex County.  Moreover she is a member of the City of Perth Amboy Municipal Identification Task Force Committee.  Additionally, Ms. Perez is on the Committee for My Sister’s Keeper.
