LSNJ-Housing Attorney in General Representation Unit (currently remote)

02 Apr 2021 11:33 AM | Lisette Guzman

Housing Attorney

LSNJ seeks a housing attorney to join the housing advocacy team, as part of the General Representation Unit. The events of 2020 have highlighted the need for an additional housing advocate at LSNJ, to address racial and economic inequities in housing across New Jersey. The candidate must have a commitment to advocacy on behalf of low income marginalized people and some familiarity with and understanding of anti-poverty housing policy. The Housing Attorney may have several different job duties and responsibilities, and these responsibilities could shift over time ranging from direct representation of tenants to policy advocacy and impact litigation.

Working collaboratively with LSNJ’s housing team, under the direction and supervision of the program’s Practice Area Leader, the Housing Attorney may assist with landlord/tenant problems, eviction defense and affirmative housing complaints to enforce tenant rights to decent, safe and affordable housing. They will also be involved in community and client education and outreach activities, and system reform projects to identify and develop strategies to protect, preserve and expand the housing rights and opportunities for low-income people. Such strategies will be multi-pronged, including individual representation in eviction defense, litigation, legislative and administrative policy advocacy, and community education and engagement.

Advocacy areas include public housing and other federal and state subsidized housing; ensuring and enforcing tenants' rights in evictions and affirmative legal access to enforce tenant rights; addressing issues of housing preservation, gentrification and displacement; fair housing, and the intersection between housing policy and racial justice.

The housing attorney will also participate in training and technical support for advocates across New Jersey’s five regional legal services programs and will assist in the development of community legal education materials and presentations for tenants, tenant advocates and other community housing and shelter organizations.

Desired Experience & Qualifications:

  • Three to five years of relevant legal experience preferred, but other advocates with a significant interest in housing law and other relevant experience are encouraged to apply.
  • Expertise (or a willingness to develop expertise) in housing law and policy including public and subsidized housing, landlord tenant issues, eviction defense, housing preservation, gentrification, fair housing and race equity, and other housing opportunity issues
  • Litigation and/or policy advocacy experience
  • Ability to establish and maintain collaborative working relationships.
  • J.D. and license to practice law in New Jersey or an ability to gain admission.

LSNJ offers a positive workplace (currently remote) among colleagues who enjoy and are passionate about their work. We encourage a supportive team work environment, with work-life balance. Benefits include comprehensive health and retirement plans and in-house trainings that offer CLE credit.

To be considered, send a cover letter describing your interest and related legal background, along with a resume detailing your previous related experience and the states and years of all bar admissions. Please also include two recent legal writing samples. Send all required components to jobs@lsnj.org. EOE.
