LJP is seeking to hire a Litigation Director to supervise and oversee the activities of the Legal team in New York City and Long Island, ranging from Legal Fellows to Senior Counsel, and a Senior Legal Assistant. The Litigation Director will provide litigation assistance and support when necessary for legal staff in the Southeast Regional office. Legal staff also includes legal externs from partner law firms, and law and college student interns as well.
With the support and guidance of the President & General Counsel and the Deputy General Counsel, the Litigation Director oversees and coordinates LatinoJustice's litigation docket; has responsibility for identifying and developing new cases based on organizational priorities and ensuring their effective execution; and actively participates in litigation as well.
As a key representative of the organization, the Litigation Director will serve as public spokesperson for LJP when needed, working with Communications staff and media to raise and maintain the organization’s public profile; represent LJP in various community coalitions and government task forces; collaborate with the Development Department as needed in preparing grant proposals and reports; and ensuring that legal staff supports and participates in the organization’s communications and development efforts.
Contribute to the organizational leadership as a member of the management team and contribute to the overall strategy for advancing the organizational mission.
Provide supervision and leadership to all legal staff including lawyers, legal fellows, senior legal assistant, externs, and interns.
Support the Deputy General Counsel in maintaining external relations with law schools, law firms, and bar associations to develop a pool of applicants to recruit, hire and retain for existing legal positions and pro bono partnerships.
Serve as primary Legal Division liaison and contact with other LJ Divisions concerning communications and media outreach, development and fundraising, fiscal and office protocols, and legal activities.
Serve on the LJP Board Litigation Committee.
Demonstrated professional commitment to civil rights issues and commitment to advancing social justice and human rights for Latinos.
Minimum of 15 years federal and state litigation experience including handling complex and affirmative class action cases.
Excellent written and oral communication skills, including ability to speak publicly at both formal and extemporaneous presentations.
Excellent interpersonal and supervisory skills.
Detail-oriented individual; able to prioritize, delegate, and manage multiple tasks and responsibilities.
History of successful collaboration with a broad and diverse range of communities and individuals.
Admission to practice law in good standing required. Admission to New York State Bar preferred. Admission to other state bars where LJP has local presence will be considered.
Spanish fluency is preferred.
