THE HISPANIC BAR ASSOCIATION OF NEW JERSEY CONGRATULATES THE HONORABLE JACLYN MEDINA, ESQ. ON HER APPOINTMENT TO THE SUPERIOR COURT OF

NEW JERSEY

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE: May 31, 2019

The Hispanic Bar Association of New Jersey (“HBA-NJ”) congratulates our friend and former HBA-NJ board member, Jaclyn Medina, Esq., on her recent New Jersey Senate confirmation and swearing-in as a New Jersey Superior Court Judge in Bergen County.

Judge Medina is an active member of the HBA-NJ and previously served on the HBA-NJ Executive Board and Board of Trustees for approximately seven years.  As an HBA-NJ Board Member, Judge Medina chaired various committees, most recently serving as the Vice President of the Northern Region during the 2017-2018 Term.  HBA-NJ President Julia A. López said, “Judge Medina previously worked with the HBA-NJ’s Judicial and Prosecutorial Appointment Committee.  Given her prior involvement in the committee, it was great to see that the HBA-NJ was able to endorse her and assist in elevating Judge Medina to the State Judiciary.  She is extremely deserving of this honor and we have no doubt that she will continue to serve the Latino community with the utmost respect and dignity.”

Prior to her appointment to the bench, Judge Medina was a managing attorney in the Bergen Criminal Trial Region of the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender (“OPD”).  She served on the OPD’s Statewide Continuing Legal Education Committee and as Co-Chair of the Ethics and Professionalism Committee.  Judge Medina also sat on the New Jersey Supreme Court’s District Ethics and Minority Concerns Committees.  In 2016, the New Jersey Law Journal selected Her Honor as a recipient of the New Leaders of the Bar Award and in 2018, the Hispanic National Bar Association (“HNBA”) honored her as a Top Attorney Under 40.  Judge Medina has been a guest speaker at numerous symposiums on various topics, including women’s empowerment and minority career advancement, and has proudly served as a mentor to many Latinx law students.

Judge Medina also served as an adjunct professor at Farleigh Dickinson University, where she taught undergraduate and graduate students, as well as diplomats from various consulates and missions to the United Nations.   She received her B.A. from the School of Diplomacy and International Relations at Seton Hall University and her J.D. from Rutgers Law School in Camden, New Jersey, where she earned the Chief Justice Richard J. Hughes Award for Excellence in Lawyering, held a two-term Presidency of Alianza, was Vice-President of Committees of the Law Student Division of the HNBA, and served as the Public Relations Editor for the Journal of Law and Urban Policy.  Prior to joining the OPD, Judge Medina served as a law clerk to the Honorable Lois Lipton of the Superior Court of New Jersey, Law Division.

While reflecting on Judge Medina’s recent appointment to the State Judiciary, HBA-NJ President López said, “I had the pleasure of working with now Judge Medina over the years.  There is no doubt that she will be a fantastic addition to the Judiciary.  We are very pleased that the Senate increased the diversity of the State Judiciary by confirming Judge Medina, but there is more work to be done.  Our courts should reflect the diverse population in the State of New Jersey.  We will therefore continue to advocate for the appointment of diverse and qualified candidates to our bench.  For now, we celebrate Judge Medina’s well-deserved appointment and know that Her Honor will continue to make the HBA-NJ proud.  We wish and look forward to her continued success.”
