 Job Description:

The Law Department is seeking candidates to work in the Contracts and Legislation Section to provide general legal counsel to municipal departments and offices. As well as the Municipal Prosecutor's Office and the Civil Litigation Section.

Practice Description:

Contracts and Legislation

The ideal candidate should have experience drafting and reviewing legislation, contracts, RFQs and RFPs, resolutions, ordinances, executive orders, and bid specifications; and researching various legal issues with a concentration on government procurement matters. The position will require that the attorney draft legal opinions on various issues, including novel public policy matters, and recommend an appropriate course of action. The attorney will also assist with the defense of civil litigation matters, especially contract disputes. The successful candidate should have a proven ability to perform legal research, provide and counsel on the following practice areas, including but not limited to the Local Public Contracts Law, Redevelopment and Housing, Local Lands and Buildings, Long Term Tax Exemption, Local Fiscal Affairs and Budget, the Open Public Records Act and the Open Public Meetings Act. The individual should have the ability to multi-task in a fast paced environment with limited resources.

Municipal Prosecutor's Office

The potential candidate will be prosecuting criminal, quasi-criminal, disorderly persons offenses, motor vehicle offenses and any other matters in which the Newark Municipal Court has jurisdiction. The candidate will review cases involving violations of City Code and State Statutes, perform legal research to support the State/City position in hearings and trials, prepare and respond to motions, and conduct discovery.

Civil Litigation Section

The potential candidate will be handling tort claims, including but not limited to, dangerous condition cases, slip and falls, property damage, motor vehicle accidents, employment discrimination, and breach of contract matters. The potential candidate will also be handling civil rights matters such as false arrest/imprisonment, improper use of force, and improper police pursuits.


For all three - A Juris Doctor Degree from an American Bar Association (ABA) accredited law school and admission to practice law in the State of New Jersey is required. Newark residents are strongly encouraged to apply. For Municipal Prosecutor's Office, preference of at least one year of related prosecution experience, and license must be in good standing. For Civil Litigation Section, The preferred candidate will have prior trial court experience.
